OMODA Secures A Coveted Place In SA’s Top 10 Passenger Car Market

What makes a car brand memorable? Is it the sleek designs, cutting-edge technology, or the ability to deliver exceptional value in a crowded market? For OMODA, the answer seems to be all of the above. 2024 was a good year for the Chinese brand as it inched a spot in South Africa’s top 10 passenger car rankings in December, solidifying its reputation as a rising force in a market often dominated by legacy players.

Local consumers have enthusiastically embraced OMODA’s premium SUVs, with the OMODA C5 achieving notable success and the flagship OMODA C9 gaining traction in the higher-end market. With 655 vehicles sold in a single month, OMODA & JAECOO (under the O&J division) ranked ahead of several mainstream automakers hailing from Japan and Europe. The OMODA C5, a six-model line-up including a limited-edition GT derivative, accounted for a respectable 408 units.

OMODA And JAECOO Dynamic Model Range

Brand O&J, the Chery Group division representing the OMODA and JAECOO marques, debuted in South Africa in 2023 with the launch of the OMODA C5. Earlier in 2024, OMODA introduced wallet-friendly variants like the Street and Style editions, expanding its reach and appeal to buyers who want a premium experience at an accessible price point. Adding to the momentum, OMODA added to its range the luxurious C9 flagship, available in two generously equipped derivatives. However, OMODA’s success story isn’t complete without a nod to its sibling, the JAECOO.

Since its April 2024 debut, the JAECOO J7 has found nearly 1,600 homes. Its refined design and mid-size SUV appeal have made it a popular choice for buyers looking to upgrade their driving experience. Globally, OMODA & JAECOO continue to soar, reaching a record 23,409 sales in November 2024 and maintaining over 20,000 monthly units for seven consecutive months. Since its launch in 2022, the brand has sold an impressive 410,000 vehicles worldwide and is on track to exceed its goal of 1.5 million global sales by 2030.

2025 Is A Busy Year For The O&J Division

The dual-brand venture is gearing up for a transformative 2025, driven by an exciting lineup of six new models. Under the OMODA banner, the upcoming C7 will slot between the C5 and C9, offering buyers an enticing mid-tier option. The C9 lineup is also set to grow with the debut of the C9 PHEV, signalling OMODA’s entry into South Africa’s electrified vehicle market.

Meanwhile, JAECOO is set to introduce the J5, positioned below the J7, as its first offering in the sought-after compact SUV segment. Adding to the excitement, the all-electric J6 will launch as the first battery-powered vehicle under the JAECOO badge, combining crossover practicality with light off-road capability.

2025 will also see the arrival of the J7 PHEV, adding a plug-in hybrid option to the mix. Topping it all off, the J8 will become the marque’s flagship model.
