New OMODA C9 luxury flagship officially launches in South Africa

OMODA South Africa is pleased to announce the official market introduction of the luxurious new OMODA C9, with this highly anticipated flagship model available from launch in two generously equipped derivatives.

Introduced at an elegant event at the Norval Foundation – a prestigious art museum and sculpture garden in Cape Town – the upmarket OMODA C9 is offered in both front- (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) forms.

The C9 FWD’s official retail price is R785,900.00, while the C9 AWD is priced at R885,900.00. However, as part of a special launch promotion, the FWD will be available for just R760,000.00 and the AWD for only R860,000.00 for the first month of sales.

As OMODA’s flagship model, the innovative OMODA C9 is set apart not only by its award-winning avant-garde exterior design but also by its powerful turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine, which delivers 192 kW and 400 Nm via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

“We’re excited to officially launch the cutting-edge new flagship OMODA C9, which we’re convinced will turn heads with its cutting-edge yet elegant styling and immensely long list of standard luxury features,” said Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for OMODA & JAECOO South Africa.

The OMODA C9 FWD derivative boasts a lengthy list of standard equipment, including items such as 20-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate, black leather upholstery, electrically adjustable front seats (with heating and ventilation), a heated steering wheel and dual-zone climate control, the latter replete with a dedicated control panel and vents for the second row.

Other standout features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen (combined as a single curved display), an 8-speaker Sony sound system, wireless smartphone charging, a head-up display, parking sensors (front and rear), a 540-degree camera system, multi-colour ambient cabin lighting and a raft of highly advanced driver-assistance safety features.

The OMODA C9 AWD variant, meanwhile, adds luxuries such as adaptive suspension, off-road driving modes, Nappa leather upholstery, a black-and-brown interior colour scheme, red brake callipers, a 12-speaker Sony sound system, an integrated fragrance system and an adaptive front lighting system, complete with an intelligent welcome mode.

The OMODA C9 launch event was attended by esteemed members of the media – including journalists from major publications as well as members of the OMODA family, Boitumelo Thulo (better known as Boity) and DJ Zinhle.

Several other A-list celebrities – such as Minnie Dlamini, Anele Zondo, Nobukhosi Mukwevho and Mohale Motaung, to name but a few – were also in attendance, while sought-after visual artist Ramarutha Makoba was on hand to reveal a one-of-a-kind artwork that will soon be auctioned off for charity.

The striking new OMODA C9 is set to shake up South Africa’s luxury SUV market with its award-winning design, which combines exquisite exterior proportions and dynamic lines with a technology-filled yet user-centred cabin.

Having been presented with a Gold Award in the Automotive & Transport category at the prestigious International Design Awards (IDA), the OMODA C9 – which is known as the Exeed RX in some markets – became the first high-end vehicle from a Chinese brand to achieve this honour.

Founded in 2007, the IDA recognises and celebrates “exceptional design” across several categories, with the organisation’s highly respected jury comprising a carefully selected panel of industry experts. These jurors gave the C9 a Gold Award for its fresh approach to automotive aesthetics.

Distinct from all other luxury SUVs on the market, the soon-to-launch C9 features not only an eye-catching coupé-like silhouette – complete with a dramatically sloping fastback-style roofline – but also a design language influenced by the time-tested Golden Ratio principle and centred on the aesthetics of light, both inside and out.

The daytime running lights, for instance, were inspired by the Greek letter “Σ” and feature as many as 134 LED elements. The striking taillights exhibit a similarly artistic flair, while the luxurious cabin boasts a 256-colour ambient lighting system that allows occupants to customise the interior’s illumination according to their mood.

OMODA and JAECOO soar to new heights on SA’s sales charts

The Chery Group division comprising the fast-growing OMODA and JAECOO marques – Brand O&J – soared to a new high on South Africa’s sales charts in September 2024, ranking inside the top 15 on the overall manufacturer standings for the very first time.

Based on figures reported to industry representative body naamsa, this latest placing of 15th position overall saw Brand O&J jump ahead of yet more long-established automakers from Europe and Japan, despite the fact that it’s still a relatively new entity in the country’s highly competitive new-vehicle market.

In addition, Brand O&J found itself on the very cusp of breaking into the top 10 of South Africa’s passenger-vehicle segment, having rocketed to an astonishing 11th place in this category in September.

While a substantial 28% of all registrations in South Africa’s passenger-vehicle segment last month came courtesy of sales to the rental industry, Brand O&J was one of the few automakers towards the top of the charts not dependent on this channel, with every single unit instead sold via its extensive dealership network.

“The success of our dealerships and the fact that we’ve not had to rely on other sales channels – be they the rental space, sales to government or industry corporate sales – proves just how strongly our OMODA and JAECOO products resonate with private buyers,” said Hans Greyling, General Manager for OMODA and JAECOO South Africa.

Last month, the stylish OMODA C5 accounted for approximately 65% of Brand O&J’s local registrations, while the increasingly popular JAECOO J7 represented the remaining 35% of the overall total. The sustained success of these two products bodes exceptionally well for Brand O&J considering it has several new models in the pipeline for the local market.

New OMODA C9 luxury flagship previewed at glamorous evening event

OMODA South Africa held an exclusive soirée this week to preview its upcoming C9 luxury flagship model, giving high-profile guests a taste of this eagerly anticipated newcomer’s distinctly upmarket character.

Held at Langhams Lifestyle Estate in Fourways, Johannesburg the specially curated evening event was held in collaboration with Absa, OMODA’s vehicle-finance alliance partner and one of Africa’s largest diversified financial services groups.

Treating guests to some of the finer things in life, the C9 preview event incorporated a glamorous champagne experience as well as roaming gourmet canapés and artistically presented oysters.

Guests included A-list celebrities such as Khosi Nkosi, Dr Khanyile, Gogo Skhotheni, Khosi Twala and Brian Temba, to name but a few. In addition, Absa representatives, members of the media and government officials were in attendance, along with sought-after visual artist Ramarutha Makoba.

Invited guests had the opportunity to “leave their mark” on a special canvas, which Makoba will soon transform into a one-of-a-kind work of art. The final artistic piece will be revealed at the official launch of the OMODA C9 in October 2024, before being auctioned off for charity.

“Considering the new C9 is itself a true masterpiece of automotive design, our collaboration with an artist of Ramarutha’s stature is fitting. OMODA & JAECOO the centre of attention at 2024 Festival of Motoring

Brand O&J – the Chery Group division comprising the OMODA and JAECOO marques – was the centre of attention at South Africa’s 2024 Festival of Motoring in Gauteng, reflecting its rapid rise up the local sales charts.

Held at the iconic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit from 30 August to 1 September 2024, the largest industry-supported automotive show on the African continent provided the ideal setting to display the latest OMODA and JAECOO products.

For instance, the popular OMODA C5 was on hand to showcase its futuristic styling and cutting-edge technology, while the soon-to-launch OMODA C9 coupé-style flagship SUV likewise attracted plenty of attention thanks to its award-winning design and luxurious cabin.

In addition, the JAECOO J7 – a highly capable urban off-road SUV that, like the OMODA C5, is fast climbing the sales charts – continued to win the hearts of outdoor-loving South African motorists, while also turning heads with its modern yet classic design aesthetic.

Meanwhile, in an exciting preview of Brand O&J’s imminent expansion into the local new-energy vehicle space, the fully electric JAECOO J6 was introduced to South Africans, who were captivated by its retro-inspired exterior design, boxy proportions and surprisingly spacious interior.

Measuring 4 406 mm long, the new JAECOO J6 – which features a classic yet modern off-road look – is endowed with a generous 2 715 mm wheelbase that translates into a deceptively spacious interior. All-wheel-drive variants are equipped with a 70 kW electric motor up front and a 135 kW electric motor at the rear, resulting in a total system power output as high as 205 kW.

The 0-100 km/h sprint is thus seen off in a mere 6.5 seconds, while the single-charge range comes in at over 500 km, depending on the chosen battery configuration. Designed to handle various terrains with ease, the new model is equipped with as many as 9 driving modes. The J6 is scheduled to launch in SA in the opening quarter of 2025, kicking off Brand O&J’s new-energy journey, which will also include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

“The fact that every single one of the vehicles we displayed at the Festival of Motoring drew huge interest from attendees speaks volumes for both the design and quality of our cars as well as the local market’s incredibly positive sentiment towards these fresh brands,” said Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for OMODA & JAECOO South Africa.

“In short, Brand O&J has quickly become a force that simply cannot be ignored in South Africa’s highly competitive automotive market. And, of course there’s plenty more to come,” added Gahagan.

While the C9 and J6 – along with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the J7 – are next on the cards for South Africa, development of new OMODA and JAECOO models continues apace overseas. For instance, extreme high-temperature testing of the freshly revealed OMODA C7 was recently completed in China, while teaser images and official design sketches of the exciting new JAECOO J5 were revealed ahead of this all-new model’s upcoming unveiling.

Since Brand O&J’s global launch in 2023, the company has attracted as many as 300 000 sales worldwide (up until the end July 2024), expanding into more than 40 countries and opening in excess of 875 showrooms around the world. This is a clear illustration of OMODA and JAECOO’s vision of together growing into one of the strongest brands globally.

That vision includes Europe. In February 2024, Brand O&J became the first Chery Group division to officially enter the European market, holding a celebratory event in Madrid, Spain. Around two months later, the President of Spain joined the President of Chery International to witness the inauguration of Brand O&J’s first EU factory. This makes Brand O&J the first Chinese automaker to set up a production plant in Europe, further demonstrating its determination to continue building only the highest-quality products.

Meanwhile, in mid-October, OMODA and JAECOO will join hands with individuals from more than 40 countries around the world to hold the 2024 International User Ecological Co-creation Conference at the brand’s headquarters. This ground-breaking event will explore the future of ecological travel as part of the brand’s philosophy of “More Than Cars”.



OMODA Models C7, C9 And E5 On Their Way To SA

When it comes to making a statement on the road, nothing quite does it like a luxury SUV. That’s exactly what OMODA is bringing to South Africa. For those who are unfamiliar, OMODA is a relatively new luxury brand under the Chery umbrella that made its South African debut in April 2023 with just one crossover, the C5. Since its arrival, the OMODA C5 has been turning heads and earning praise for its great balance of value and flair.

Today, the Chinese brand is building on the success of the C5 with some big plans for the rest of 2024 and onwards. The C7, C9, and E5 are all set to hit the market soon, and there’s a lot of buzz around what these new models will bring to the table. South Africans are definitely paying attention and with good reason.

OMODA E5

Starting with the E5, this model is the all-electric version of the C5 crossover, which, until now, has been the only OMODA available in South Africa. The E5 was designed with electrification from the ground up, so no major modifications were needed to fit its electric drivetrain. It features a front-mounted e-motor delivering 150kW and 340 Nm, a noticeable boost over the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol C5’s 115kW and 230Nm.

Powered by a 61kWh battery, the E5 offers an impressive 450 km range and can recharge to 80% in just 40 minutes. It’s also expected to match its petrol sibling in terms of features, including adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring, a sunroof, an electric tailgate, ventilated leather sports seats, ambient lighting, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, an eight-speaker Sony sound system, a 50W wireless charger, and dual 10.25-inch screens.

OMODA C7

Revealed to the world after the Beijing Motor Show in April 2024,  the OMODA C7 slots between the existing C5 and the upcoming C9. With a design that arguably outshines the C5, the C7 is anticipated to arrive in South Africa sometime in 2025.

Comparable in size to the Toyota RAV4, the OMODA C7 boasts a sleeker, more low-slung design that the brand dubs “Stylish 360.” While it shares the C5’s large borderless grille, the C7 stands out with its triangular headlights and hammerhead-style bumper.

Inside, the C7 is loaded with luxury and tech, including a unique 15.6-inch sliding touchscreen that can shift over to the front passenger’s side of the dash. OMODA is keeping the C7’s powertrain details under wraps for now, but they have revealed one intriguing feature: an “extreme energy-saving mode” that could enable the C7 to cover up to 1,200km on a full tank of unleaded and a fully charged battery.

OMODA C9

Also confirmed for the local market is the OMODA C9, a rebadged model from one of Chery’s other sub-brands, Exeed. Sporting a 400T badge, the OMODA C9 packs a punch with its turbocharged 2.0L petrol engine, delivering 197kW and 400 Nm of torque on tap. It feeds an all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The larger C9, OMODA’s flagship in several major export markets, will offer a choice between a full petrol engine and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, though the PHEV’s arrival is still up in the air. Set to debut in the third quarter of 2024, the C9 is set to be the most luxurious model OMODA has to offer.

As the fastest-growing automotive brand globally, the remarkable performance of Brand O&J – the Chery Group division comprising the OMODA and JAECOO marques – has helped its parent company crack the prestigious 2024 Fortune Global 500 list.

Based on its latest financial results, the Chery Holding Group featured on the 2024 Fortune Global 500 list, ranking in an impressive 385th position. As Brand O&J, both OMODA and JAECOO have played a crucial role in Chery’s latest global growth, together contributing a considerable 20.8% to the group’s total export volume.

Though both OMODA and JAECOO are still new entities in the highly competitive global new-vehicle market, cumulative worldwide sales have already exceeded 280 000 units, positioning Brand O&J as the fastest-growing automotive brand globally. It’s a similar case in South Africa, where Brand O&J is one of, if not the, fastest-growing new entrant to the market.

This local growth is expected to accelerate further as Brand O&J expands its line-up in the coming months, with the luxurious OMODA C9 flagship model set to hit the market in South Africa soon. JAECOO, meanwhile, is gearing up to welcome not only the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the J7 and the J8 but also the exciting new fully electric J6.

OMODA supports SA athletes with clever #PassTheTorch campaign

OMODA South Africa has launched a clever new #PassTheTorch social-media campaign in support of local athletes currently competing in France at one of the world’s largest sporting events.

The unique online initiative calls for OMODA brand ambassadors, as well as OMODA O-CLUB friends and influencers, to pass between them a flame-themed OMODA C5 vehicle. Featuring an eye-catching orange-and-black wrap, this special car was revealed at the fast-growing brand’s recent “Breakfast Run” event in Gauteng, where it formed part of a convoy comprising more than 100 cars.

Under the #PassTheTorch campaign, each personality will be given a specific task to tackle. Once their assignment is complete, they will post photographs or videos on social media, showing themselves dressed in a suitably stylish outfit alongside the car in question. From there, they will publicly challenge another personality, effectively “passing the torch” to the next participant.

OMODA South Africa officially kicked off the campaign by challenging Thandokazi P Mashalaba – a popular digital content creator who focuses on beauty, hair, fashion and lifestyle – to undertake a vigorous 20-minute treadmill session while dressed in her most fashionable athleisure wear.

Job done, Thando passed the torch to Chantel Hoffman, challenging the content creator and socialite – who also happens to be a proud OMODA C5 owner – to a 20-minute power walk, which she duly completed at an athletics track dressed in an outfit that perfectly matched the flame-themed C5.

After Hoffman, the torch will be passed to other OMODA ambassadors such as Boitumelo “Boity” Thulo, TV personality, Nonkanyiso “LaConco” Conco, and internet personality Mohale Motaung, as well as various other O-CLUB friends and influencers, such as customer Palesa Dhlomo and finally Sphe_Music. Having commenced on 26 July 2024, the campaign will run until the closing of the international multi-sport tournament on 11 August 2024.

OMODA & JAECOO are pleased to announce a new partnership with Absa, a collaboration aimed at providing South African new-car buyers with fuss-free vehicle finance solutions.

At the start of June 2024, the fast-growing automotive marques – which are together known as Brand O&J – entered into a vehicle-finance alliance agreement with what is one of Africa’s largest diversified financial services groups. As such, OMODA JAECOO Finance, a product of Absa, was born.

OMODA South Africa has launched an exciting new entry-level version of the popular C5 crossover, a move that makes the fast-growing brand even more accessible to South African new-car buyers

Priced at just R359 900, the arrival of the new C5 Style serves to lower the line-up’s starting price by a considerable R88 000. Despite slotting in at the foot of the range, the new C5 Style – which looks exactly like the C5 Tech from the exterior, while also welcoming a fresh Bloodstone Red hue to the colour palette – is anything but sparsely equipped

OMODA marked a highly successful first year in South Africa with a strong sales performance in April 2024, outselling several long-established brands in the process.

Reporting sales figures to industry representative body Naamsa for the first time since officially hitting the road in South Africa a year ago, OMODA’s final tally accounted for a healthy 12.8% of the Chery Group’s record 2 009 total registrations for the month.

“In April 2024, the Chery Group registered its highest-ever sales figures in South Africa, securing 6th place on the overall manufacturer standings for the month and 4th in the passenger-vehicle segment. OMODA, which functions as an independent brand within the Chery Group, played a key role in this record-breaking performance,” said Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager Chery/OMODA & JAECOO South Africa.

When considering individual brands as opposed to manufacturers, OMODA placed a highly respectable 19th out of the 54 marques currently operating in South Africa’s new-vehicle market, with this young premium brand thus ranking ahead of several mainstream automakers hailing from Japan and Europe.

The brand, which is yet to celebrate its first birthday on local soil, was selected as a finalist in the 2024 South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition. The OMODA C5 will compete in the Compact Family category.

The SA Guild of Mobility Journalists’ decision to pick the OMODA C5 in the Compact Family category supports Gahagan’s statement.

The OMODA C5 is a semi-finalist in the 2023/24 South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition.

That’s right! One of South Africa’s youngest vehicle brands has been picked as a contender in this esteemed competition by some of the best South African automotive and mobility journalists.

OMODA received the nod from the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) for its OMODA C5, its current flagship range and the model that has defined the OMODA brand in South Africa.

“When we decided to introduce the OMODA brand to South Africa, we specifically picked the OMODA C5 to be our first model.

“This model is both a showcase of our technological development with its 115 kW 1.5 litre turbo-petrol engine and a perfect example of our futuristic design language that sees nothing as sacred and that looks at any new technology or design element through the lens of functionality and customer benefit,” says Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager of Omoda South Africa.

It wouldn’t be summer without the Ballito BIG Week and the KZN SUMMER Festival. And it wouldn’t be the hottest ticket on the festival calendar without OMODA.

OMODA has joined the festivities in Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal, as the Official Vehicle Partner to both music festivals. This means that it will not only support the various music events but also drive the music stars to and from Sugar Rush Park.

The Ballito BIG Week starts this Friday, and the festivities end with a massive New Year’s Eve event on 31 December and the car of choice for all the fun and festivities is the OMODA C5.

Not done yet, the third Ballito BIG Week concerts will kick off on Friday, 29 December with superstar DJs, including Blxckie, DBN Gogo, Mellow & Sleazy, DJ Lag, Whitesoul and others.

The fun reaches a crescendo on New Year’s Eve when global stars GoldFish will rock Ballito. They will be joined by the Saxby Twins and Neon Dreams for the perfect start to the new year.
